Moving On After A Loved One With Alzheimer’s Passes Away

Grief must be fully experienced before you can move on. You need to allow yourself time to grieve. It’s important to take good care of yourself physically and emotionally during this time. It will also help to realize that with time your pain will lessen and you will be able to move on.

At some point – when you feel you’re ready – try to begin “returning to the world.” Take up a new hobby or go back to one that lapsed while you were caring for your loved one. Spend more time with the family members and friends you may have seen less in the preceding months or years. Some people also benefit from doing volunteer work.

Much to my surprise, one day I suddenly realized that I’d completely forgotten the third anniversary of Ed’s death a month earlier. That’s when I knew my grief was largely resolved.

My mom died 2 years ago. Since then I started volunteering to visit Alzheimer’s patients in a nearby nursing home. It has helped me a lot just to know I can help others who were in the situation my mom was in.

My wonderful father passed away last March and I miss him so much. I used to visit him every day. He just loved listening to music with me. I don’t think anything will ever end my sorrow over my loss, although I guess it probably will come to an end someday. I hope so.

I have been grieving the loss of my wife of 25 years, who died of young onset Alzheimer’s. She was only 57. I think grief is a very personal thing and everyone does it in their own way. At first I was OK, then I got very depressed and even wanted to die. I went to a grief counselor, who helped me very much. I’ve taken up gardening, which my wife used to do as her hobby. When I’m digging in the earth and planting flowers I feel close to her and it’s a good feeling.
